This year marks the 16th anniversary of the Fantasia Film Festival, whose growth and success is a testament to the passion and hard work of the team that makes it happen year after year. While the first year's focus was primarily a retrospective of Asian cinema from the 1980s and 1990s, by now most people know it's grown to include a wide range of genres. Every year also provides a chance to catch a number of Canadian, North American, and world film premieres, and an opportunity to hobnob with some of the festival's special guests (this year, you might run into Mark Hamill or Teller of Penn & Teller fame).
But the 2012 edition marks another anniversary: Plank and Fantasia are celebrating 10 years of working together to deliver you the festival's online home, fantasiafestival.com.
This year we overhauled the site, re-building the custom film and content management system from the ground up and giving site administrators greater control over the site's content. The new version continues to power the content published not only to the site, but to the print edition of the program which goes to press two weeks before the festival begins.
The site's templates and layouts were revised early on and the 2012 design took advantage of an increase in screen real estate to deliver bigger images and trailers, a bolder use of typography, and improvements to how all the info is organized onscreen for the user.
With the site seeing more and more traffic each year, we made a concerted effort to improve caching and boost the server's capabilities for site launch and throughout the festival. The result? A fast, reliable site that's seen over a million page views so far, a high page count per visit, low bounce rate and lots of time on the site per user.
We think it's the best Fantasia site yet, so what are you waiting for — there are only nine days left in the festival! Check the schedule, browse this year's spotlights, or read up on the festival's history.
